Dr. Rafael Aragunde

Born in Cayey, Puerto Rico, Aragunde went on to complete his bachelor’s degree in the University of Notre Dame, and in Rome, Italy. He was licensed and earned his doctoral degree at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, were he wrote a thesis on the german philosopher Friedrich Nietzche.

He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey campus, for 28 years and held the Eugenio María de Hostos Chair of Honor of the University of Puerto Rico system from 1993 to ’94.

He has written countless essays published in collective books and academic journals on current debates on pedagogical and university subjects. His studies and writings also focus on the dynamic of Puerto Rican thought, a topic on which he also teaches a course. In addition, he teaches courses on contemporary philosophy related to the epistemological problems of our era. He was the Secretary of the Department of Education of Puerto Rico, and Dean of the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey, between from 2002 to 2005. In 2003, he published an essay titled “Philosophy and the dialogue between ethics and genetics”.
